When you’ve made the decision to replace the roof on your building, whether it’s a residential building or a commercial building, you need to decide what type of roof you would like for your building. If you own a building with a flat roof, it is highly recommended that you use what is known as built up roofing. Another name for this type of roof is “tar and gravel”. The basic materials used consist of tar, felt (pressed fiber insulation), and a layer of gravel. It is widely considered one of the most cost effective methods when installing a new roof.

Another method for installing flat roofs is single ply roofing. Single ply uses thermoset membranes which consist of several layers of hot bitumen which is ideal for waterproofing.

One great advantage both of these roofing methods have is a life of approximately 12 years before they need to be replaced. The disadvantage is that you cannot build a new roof over these when replacement is needed. The old roof needs to be removed.

A third method in installing a new flat roof is known as foam roofing. This involves using Sprayed Polyurethane Foam (SPF) which is foam sprayed directly on the roof itself and covering all existing roofs of any type without having to replace them. This method is great for insulation and very little maintenance is required.
