Disability can happen at any time in your life, and for many reasons. Whatever the reason, if you find yourself disabled, you are going to need to make sure your home is remodeled to suit your needs.

First, check local stores for information on grants and loans to fund the remodel. Many agencies have grants to help you, and in some states the remodel can be written off on your taxes as a deduction if it is for a permanent disability.

Second, measure, or have someone measure, the width of all the hallways and the doors. This is the first thing you are going to want to get taken care of, to make sure you can move around your home. If the doors are not big enough, or the halls are too narrow, you are not going to be able to use your home.

Third, lay a ramp over any outside stairs. Laying a ramp is a cheaper way to make stairs more accessible. It is not a permanent solution, but it can be done until you can find a way to remove the stairs.

Fourth, consider the bathrooms. What support do you need in the bathroom? Do you need a handle by the toilet? The shower? Lower sinks and counters? Consider the changes you have to make to your bathroom, and then make them.
